Alexandra (Sasha) Lerman is a Russian-born New York-based artist. Lerman’s photography, video and installation aims to allegorize the news and forge personal connection to geo-political events. Her practice is rooted in the desire to interrogate pivotal moments in history that have led to the formation of today’s geo-political landscape. Lerman interweaves documentary and fiction in films, photographs and installations to allegorize the news and resist the desensitization by the news media in order to create a more personal connection to history. The themes of her work locate themselves in the shared territories of imperialism and Romanticism, the Cold War and its consequences, the history of resistance new modes of participation.
Lerman received her MFA from Columbia University and her BFA from Cooper Union. Lerman’s art and film projects have been shown at the New Museum, Austrian Cultural Forum, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Anthology Film Archives, Artists Space and Janos Gat Gallery in New York, MUSAC in Spain, the Hermitage in Russia and Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki, Greece.
